Lip Fillers

“The American Society of Plastic Surgeons highlighted an increase of 50% in lip augmentations for 18 to 55-plus-year-olds between 2000 and 2016.” And you might wonder, why is that? Every era has its decade-defining beauty movement. It was the over-plucked eyebrows in the 90s, D-cup boob jobs in the noughties, and now, it’s time for our pout.

Whether you’re looking to add super-volume to your lips (think Kylie Jenner’s lips) or something more subtle to restore lost volume and add some hydration, here at Skin Wise we can do it all. But first, what are lip fillers? How long do they actually last? And lastly, what if you don’t like them?

Hyaluronic Acid (also known as HA or Hyaluronan) contributes significantly to cell proliferation and migration and, fun fact, an average 70kg person has roughly 15 grams of hyaluronan in the body, one third of which is turned over (i.e. degraded and synthesised) every day. As we age, the production of hyaluronic acid, along with collagen and elastin) decreases. As a result, our skin loses volume, hydration and plumpness. Hyaluronic acid binds to water molecules and in return helps the skin stay hydrated and supple.

In a rare case, where the patient isn’t happy with their lips (we recommend waiting at least 2 weeks for the final result, as there will be some swelling on the day of the treatment and the final result won’t be accurate) your practitioner will be able to dissolve it with an injection called hyaluronidase which acts as a reversing agent and breaks down the hyaluronic acid so your lips will be back to normal within 3 -4 days.

Lip fillers, as opposed to lip implants, aren’t permanent. Their longevity depends on a few factors.Your metabolism regulates how quickly you can break down calories – and break down a lip filler. So don’t be surprised if it differs from what your friends or family told you. As the mouth is an area that moves a lot (talking, eating, smoking etc.) lip fillers are generally broken down faster than fillers placed in other areas on our faces so it’s advised to come in for regular top-ups.

Depending on your desired look, Skin Wise is able to advise you on the type of filler that will be best for you and on what will look best for your face shape and features.
